Event Details

The Hopland Research and Extension Center is excited to offer a brand-new certification course in 2022, the UC Climate Stewards program. Participants in this course will learn how climate is changing both our natural and social systems, and what they can do to improve ecosystem and community resilience.

The UC Climate Stewards course will introduce you to social-emotional resilience and trauma-aware practices, climate change communication, climate science, and community resilience planning. The course will combine communication, engagement, and science curricula with guest presenters, field trips, and project-based learning to immerse you in the dynamics of your local community.

Our hybrid of class discussions (online and in-person), self-paced online learning, and field-based activities will integrate locally relevant themes of fire, water and stewardship.  Through guest speakers, independent field trips and activities we will learn about and discuss principles and practices towards increasing community and ecosystem resilience to fire, drought and floods.

In-person class discussion meetings and field days will incorporate COVID-19 safety protocols.

The 10-week course schedule takes place through:

  • 9 Class Sessions run from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday evenings, scheduled for 1/5, 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 3/2, 2022. All classes are online, except the 1/5 date, which will be in person.
  • 3 Field Trips are scheduled for January 22, February 12 and February 26, 2022. Participation in field trips is required. The first two field trips will be conducted together as a class, the last field trip will be conducted individually.
  • Graduation Day, Saturday, March 5, from 9am-1pm: sharing capstone projects and celebrating your certification, in person.

Appropriate COVID precautions will be taken for any in person activities.

UC Climate Stewards is a brand new program of the UC ANR California Naturalist Program, and follows their successful learning model, designed to create a community of practicing Climate Stewards.

The Hopland Research and Extension Center is committed to building an inclusive community. We are trying something new called equity pricing that we hope will serve the community better and allow us to recover the costs of this class.

Registration is $400 per person (includes certification, instruction, some materials, and facility costs). If you are unable to pay $400 due to low income or extenuating circumstances, please use our income guide and sliding scale to adjust your course cost. Minimum payment is $200.

Hopland REC donor funds will support the costs of those who are unable to pay the total amount.

To assist you in determining an appropriate payment amount for your circumstances, 2021 Mendocino County U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development low income indicator data is provided as guidance.
